June, in Central Virginia, was an incredibly hot and dry month. Many home gardeners took on the task of watering their garden daily; yet, others weren’t able to do that and watched their crops seemingly melt away. Then July arrived and we’ve had a number of good rain storms! Dead, brown lawns have begun showing hints of green and lawn mowers are starting up once again!
But what about the garden? Well, it’s actually not too late to plant some vegetables! According to the “Virginia’s Home Garden Vegetable Planting Guide”, a publication from the Virginia Tech Extension, you can now plant: bush beans, lima beans, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, okra, peppers, southern peas, summer squash and sweet corn! And with the weatherman forecasting more rain, the outlook for growing fresh veggies is looking up! Also, be sure to check out the Planting Guide for the planting dates in August, for Fall crops! Happy growing!
