In March, the Bedford Area Master Gardeners will be presenting GROW THE GOOD LIFE, a two-part virtual, educational program.
Part 1 will take place on March 5, 2022. Frank Reilly, an environmental scientist and avid Master Gardener will present, “Gardening in a Chaotic Climate – What Can Go Wrong and What You Can Do About It”. This presentation will focus on climate change, (its impact on weather, our homes, our landscapes and our basic needs), things gardeners can do to help mitigate climate change, and suggestions of things that gardeners and homeowners can do to adapt to the extreme weather, subtly changed weather and other impacts from climate change.
Cindy Shapton, aka “The Cracked Pot Gardener”, is a writer, speaker, herbalist, floral designer, and farmer. She will speak about “Plants You Can Eat and Drink”. Her presentation will focus on many common plants growing in our gardens, yards and fields that are edible and drinkable. She will discuss which leaves and flowers you can add to a salad, sandwich, pesto or a lovely cup of tea. Join Cindy as she takes you on a virtual walk through the garden to discover fun and interesting flora with tips on the best time to harvest and eat and how to drink these awesome plants!

The second part will take place on March 12, 2022. Kerry Ann Mendez , an award-winning garden educator, author and design consultant will be discussing, “Gardening Simplified: Plants and Design Solutions for Time-Pressed and Maturing Gardeners”. This presentation will focus on what to do when job demands, kids, hectic schedules, aging bodies, and changing interests lead to gardens that are not in balance with your lifestyle. This inspiring lecture provides easy-to-follow right-sizing strategies, recommended no-fuss plant material, and design tips for stunning year-round gardens that will be as close to ‘autopilot’ as you can get. The lecture is based on her book The Right-Size Flower Garden.
Melanie Barrow, Agricultural Natural Resources Horticulture Extension Agent will present, “Good Weeds; Bad Weeds: What You Should Know About the Plant You Didn’t Plant”. Each day, gardeners and homeowners wage war against unintentionally existing plants. Weeds are simply plants that are not wanted in the place where they are growing; but despite all the flaws of weeds, many are useful and do have some benefits.
